Logo design.

Here is an image that I made for another possible logo design:

I took the idea of using a treble cleff music note and mine and Sadie's initials for the logo idea and instead of a black image it is just the text so we can place it onto any background and it will blend in.

Class feedback.

Unfortunately because assembly ran over time, I missed the class feedback that we were given on our ancillary tasks.

Sadie has informed me that the class said they prefer this style of design with a blurred background:

Rather than this style of design with a sky background:

By using the background of the blurred crowd shows more technological ability to distort and add effects to images.

Other feedback we were given was that the class liked the colour scheme we have used for the cd cover and think that we should keep this throughout the whole package.

Class feedback :)

In today's lesson we looked at everyone's work so far and gave feed back.
We showed our print work, people really liked our front CD cover and said we should keep those colour themes throughout the inside and on the back.

The only thing Miss Somel said was that the left handside image looked slightly more set back than the right hand one so it is a minor adjustment that we need to do, to just move him forward a little and get it completely even.

We showed our three choices for our posters and every one except for one person voted for our original poster design. They said it looked more original and effective, our teacher also agreed and said that the first poster looked a lot more technical.
So this is our final poster design:

Obviously we need to take our own background picture but this is definitely the design we will use.

We also showed both our design of logo's and the class voted again, it was a majority vote again for our first logo design as people said it fitted in more with the other real company logo's that we had looked at and it looked more proffessional.

So this is our logo that we will use on all our products:

We need to get feedback on our main task after all our editing is finished but so far people who have seen the shots we have have given us good comments.

Update Blog for cd cover lesson.

I hadnt posted a seperate blog to Sadie based on our cd covers because we did a joint one instead so as to not repeat ourselves by doing two seperate ones.

I think the repeated image of Joel works really well as it makes the cover less simple and gives it a quirky edge. I'm glad we chose to use a framing effect around the image to make Joel stand out more. We are still deciding on which logo to use.

I am really happy with our final design:

Posters and logo's.

We decided to make another version of our poster background using another picture of ours just out of imterest so then we can see which the class prefer as they would fit into our target audience.
This is our other option:

The sky background gives it a soft look to it and would fit in with his style. The large image of him is eye catching and a good photo. If we chose this we would obviosuly add the other deatails to it about the album launch.

We also changed the logo in it so we can show both logo's to the class and see which they think looks the most proffessional and suitable for our production.

Our first:
Our Second:

Next lesson our class will vote which poster background and which logo they preferr. I think our first logo is more proffessional looking but we need to see what our target audience think. I really like both posters so it will be helpful for us to know which would appeal to the majority of our audience.

Last lesson - 9/12/09.

Last lesson, I developed this design:
We used an image from google to get an image of blurred crowds to fit with our original hand drawn poster and then used an image that we already had of Joel to go infront. We chose this idea because it fits with the narrative of our music video, as if time is moving faster and Joel is going nowhere.
I tried different effects and ideas on photoshop to develop that idea as the image of Joel doesnt fit with the rest of the poster. I also changed the logo so that it blended with the background of the poster more.

This is my design:

I prefer this design as it is simple and looks more professional, I think on the first design, because we used an image from google as the background, Joel doesnt look part of the picture whereas everything fits together nicely on the second design. We still need to include some information on the cd/launch night so it doesnt look so bare and then we will get peoples opinions on the two designs to see which style they like best.
However, we still need to take two proper images, one of a crowd of peolpe walking, which we want to get from Leicester town, and one of Joel walking so that we can come up with a proper design with our own images, rather than ones from google or that we already had.

Poster. JOINT BLOG.

We have worked more on our draft of our poster and done it pretty much exactly how our real one will look, including our logo.

This poster relates to our video as he looks alone and people are passing him by. It is really eye catching and has all the information on it for his album launch.

Logo

Today I came into the macs to make our logo, we had designs and had talked about how we wanted it to look. This is what I think we will use, looking at other music company logos's they are best simple and just with the name, i added a music symbol though to make it more relative to our genre of production.

Basic draft of our poster.

We havent taken the photo that we want to use for our poster yet but we have made a mock up using a background image from google so we can see how we will want it to look and then take the pictures this weekend.
This is our mock up;

Editing. JOINT BLOG.

This lesson we have been editing the shots that we have and making them all black and white and lighter because they were too dark and we think this lightning is more effective and makes the shot less boring. We also added our track onto it to get the miming in time. We still need to do our outside shots and also add some more inside shots to use a more varied amount of angles, particularly the first shot of Joel singing in the kitchen.

The bedroom shots we did, looking at them again we aren't happy. They are too dark and the bedding doesn't fit with the rest of the mise en scene even though it was still in his friends house. So we are going to use his bedroom at Sadie's house because it is pretty simple and much lighter and then it will be easier to do all the other shots we want when we are free for afew hours instead of having to check we can use the boys house.
Hopefully Joel is home this weekend so we will have a time where we are all free to do those shots and possibly the outside ones if we have time and it is appropriate lighting and weather.
We have made a new shot list and to do list of everything we need to do, shots and editing wise. Until then we can focus on our poster.

For our poster ideas we are still trying to decide whether or not to use a blurred shot of a crowd of people in the background and a focussed picture of Joel infront. We have played around with a few images to practise and see what looks good and we will then apply our ideas to our final photos.

x

CD cover - Final Draft. JOINT BLOG.

We then decided to make it look a bit more interesting and less simple, even though we still want that simple effect, we decided it looked better with adding the lines and changing the background just behind Joel to give a framing effect.

It now looks like this:
We changed the font to a dark grey with the cream background, we thought it looked more professional and different, simple but more eye catching. Using the lines to frame him made it better to use just the top half of his body instead of how we were going to use a full length shot. We put 'Joel Owen' over the line so it looks like the line goes through the 'L' of Joel, we used a script font to make it look like Joel has signed the cd cover, we thought this would give it a quirky effect.

This should be pretty much our final draft, we will just need feedback from our teachers to see what they think and if there is anything we can improve on.

Back at school :) JOINT BLOG.

Sadie: I am finally better and back at school so able to get more done with our media.

Today we have been focussing on our CD cover, we uploaded the pictures we had taken and decided to use our favourite image 3 times on instead 3 seperate images. We want our cover to be really simple but look effective.

Our first draft looks like this:

We're not completely happy with this as it is too plain and doesnt look finished but we do really like the image and having it repeated. We also really like the font as we want it to look like a signiture font. We had the trebel cleff on our drawn design in with his name and we really liked it but on the computer we cant get it to look right, if we could get a trebel cleff in the same font it might fit but we can't, so we would like to include it somewhere but just need to find an appropriate place where it looks good.

POORLYYYY :(

I just saw Daisy's Blog and as she said I have been really ill, in and out of hospital this last week and a bit, so this has been the first time i have been able to come on here but hopefully i am on the mend now and should be back in school soon. Joel might be able to be home this weekend so if i was better it would be ideal to get our final filming done but i'm not sure yet, will need to check with him and speak to Daisy about how our editing has gone and what we need to do etc.
Anyway thanks Dais (L) :) hopefully see you sooon!!

Thursday 12th November

Unfortunately Sadie has been really ill recently so its been difficult to get alot done without her here.
This lesson I cut down the clips that we're using so we've got all the right footage to use. I also made each clip black and white.
Hopefully, next week, Sadie will be better so we can get on with some more work and make some progress :).

Editing.

In our lesson we were able to upload all of our shots from last friday and were really pleased with them. We havent been able to properly start editing yet because we didnt have the track on the mac yet so didn't want to cut the shots untill we knew the exactly how long and where they needed to be.
We were able to cut the fades in and out off and delete unwanted shots. We will bring the CD in and luckily Daisy and I have some of the same free periods so we can do more editing in them and then hopefully this weekend film our final shots.

Monday 2nd November

This lesson we put all our filming onto the Mac so we could import the shots and start on our editing if we had time.

We imported all of the video onto iMovie and shortened the clips that we needed to so we could get rid of any mistakes or any footage that we dont need.
We have also cut out the fade from the still shots of the glass emptying and the clock.
Over the next few weeks we will need to finish our editing and start on the outdoor filming.
We also need to start working on our ancillary tasks.

Friday 30th October

After school we went to Leicester to film all the indoor shots of Joel at his friends uni house.
Surprisingly, considering there were 3 young men living there, it was very tidy and perfect for our filming.

We started with the shots and close ups of the glass emptying on the kitchen worksurface.
We then took shots and close ups of the clock changing time.
After we finished these simple shots we went onto film Joel miming for the first verse in the kitchen.
Then followed the shots of Joel walking through the lounge, up the stairs and into his bedroom.
We then did the birds eye view shots of Joel miming on the bed and some quick shots of Joel playing the guitar.
After this we did shots of Joel walking down the stairs and back through the lounge and past everyone in the kitchen.
This last shot will eventually lead to the outdoor shots of Joel and his girlfriend which we will have to film in a few weeks when it is light outside and Joel is home from London.

Thursday 29th October

This lesson we put all our practise shots onto the mac.
Our shots came out well overall and we can now edit them properly and start applying effects.
So far we have cut all our shots down into the correct lengths that we need them and cut out any parts with mistakes in. We have also got rid of the fade effects that were automatically on the camera when we did our filming.

Also this lesson, we took still shots of our story board completed to put onto our blogs shortly.

Wednesday 28th October

Today we were given the opportunity to focus on our filming.
We were meant to be travelling down to London to film Joel at his University House, however we realised we were being a bit too optimistic and decided to film Joel at one of his friends houses in Leicester instead over the weekend when Joel is home.

Because we couldnt do any proper filming without Joel being here, we did practise shots at my house for the types of shots and camera angles we want to use for our final product.

The shots we did were:
Close ups on the glass emptying.
A close up on the clock changing time.
Up the stairs shot for when Joel will be going upstairs.
Birds eye view shot for when Joel will be miming on the bed.
A High angled shot out of the window for when Joel will be looking down to his girlfriend.
A Low angled shot up to the window for when Joel's girlfriend will be looking up to him.
A still shot with people walking behind so we can practise applying the speeding up and slowing down effects.

Filming.

This weekend we were able to get the majority of our filming done however not our outside shots. This was due to the fact I had work on saturday and prior commitments Joel had which was the reason he was coming home anyway. Most our video is inside so it was okay and we have plenty to edit in the mean time and then we will be able to film then ending part of our video in two weeks time when Joel will be home again.
The filming went really well and our location was perfect also being able to use his friends in the background was really good they fitted in perfectly and made us able to have a lot more footage.
Didn't come across any problems during filming, just need to put it on the macs and hopefully edit tomorrow.

FILMING TOMORROW DAIS :)

x

Practise Video.

In media today we were able to upload our practise shots and edit them to see if these idea's should be used in our real music video. Most our idea's had worked really well, especially the cup with the drink going down so we will definitely be using that. The video was a good idea to see what some shots of our real thing will look like.
We also were able to make our storyboard into a slide show to put on our blogs and we can easily referr back to the electronic copy now.

x

Our practise shots.

As we had a camera for yesterday we decided to make use of it even though we couldnt film with Joel, so we did some practise shots at Daisy's house so then we could see how they looked and know the best way to film them with Joel on the weekend. We tried all sorts of angles for shots we will use in the real thing. We also filmed the drink going down and clock going round so that we could see if we could edit it to look good. We have media later today so we can hopefully put the film on the mac's and test editing it to then upload to our blogs.
We planned completely what we are going to do and made a shot list so that when it comes to it we will be more efficient and know exactly what we need to do with Joel. We were hoping to head into Leicester to pick some locations for outside filming but Daisy had a driving lesson in the afternoon and we wouldn't have had time to go in and get back but most of the filming is inside but then we can find our outside locations on Friday as we are going to town to look around before we meet Joel off the train to go to his friends house.
Joel should arrive back in Leicester around 4.30pm so this will be too late to do outside filming, but we are going to try and fit in a lot of the inside filming and then complete the rest on saturday.

New Plan.

Well as getting to London for one day in the school term is pretty hard we have had to make a change of plan. As much as the outside scenery of London would be great it would be very hard to get done. So, we have decided to move our location back to leicester but we are able to use Joel's friends student house in Leicester so that it still has the same look to it, i.e not like a family home. His friends will then also be able to help out as backing characters to the video and would fit in really well as they are obviously the same style as Joel.

I have this picture of some of his friends,

You can see that they would fit in with our style of video really well.
Luckily for us Joel will be home this weekend so we plan to try and get all our filming done over friday and saturday.
As we had a camera for tomorrow and were hoping to use wednesday to get filming done we have decided to take the opportunity to go into leicester and find good places to film outside shots and also do practise shots, of things we want to achieve with Joel, just using ourselves so that when it comes to the weekend we know exactly what we are doing and where we need to go etc.
We can then upload these shots onto the computers to edit and play around with to see what effects we will be capable of preducing and will be like a mockup so our real thing will look even better having learnt from our practise shots.

Holiday work - aka NOTHING.

Over the half term we had arranged to travel to London for the day to film Joel at his student house. We thought that this setting would be more appropriate to the style of Joel's music and the house would be more suitable for Joel.
HOWEVER, because our "Technology College" only owns 8 cameras and only 5 of them work, we werent even able to get a camera to do our filming.
Therefore, we have had to reschedule when we will film and are hoping to travel to London in the week.

This scam of a technology college.

Our filming schedual was RUINED by the lack of equipment our so called technology college can provide us with. We wanted to book a camera but out of the mere 8 our school owns then only 5 were working! So we couldnt have one over the holidays.
As our filming plans are quite extravegant and we are wanting to go to London this has made it hard as half term would have been ideal, so we may have to try and go on a weekend or miss a day from school when we have media, we will need to talk to Joel and see when we both can make it. Idealy it needs to be as soon as possible. Hopefully we are going to be able to get one of the few cameras on wednesday where we have double media and go up to london on tuesday night and have all day wednesday in london to film, well untill around 3 when obviously the light changes.

Filming.

Joel is in Leicester this weekend so we are sorting out a filming schedual with him, he is travelling back to London on Sunday, we think Daisy and I will go with him then and probably come back monday or tuesday depending on how long it takes to get all our filming done.
We already had taken some photo's of Joel that we had thought about using for the ancillary tasks but we are going to take a still camera to London aswell so that we can take some there incase we prefer these or decide to use key locations in London that we may have used in the video. We are able to use our own still camera but need to get a camera from the school tomorrow to have over half term and hopefully complete all our filming.

14/10/09 - Catch Up

This lesson I finished writing up about the theories and applying them to our work.
I am about 2 lessons behind now due to missing last lesson because of my theory test so for the rest of this lesson I am going to research in to Andrew Goodwin's theory and if I have time I will make any amendments to the blogs.

This lesson is a double so towards the end of first lesson, Sadie and I spoke to Mr Nicolle about what aspects of our blog were good and what we needed to add to it.
The feedback we were given were to add seperate labels to represent sections of the blogs which I have now done, to embed the youtube clips and if we can to find a way to embed a document page for the lyrics.
We were also told to link any theory work we have done to our practical which I have now done.

Andrew Goodwin identifies key features of a music video:
- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.

- Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography.

- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.

- Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc.

- There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.

Andrew Goodwin says that music videos are constructed by links between the visual aspects, the song and the artist. These aspects build up relationships in the videos and through the use of close-ups it represents the artist and gives them the publicity they need.
He says that the use of Voyeurism is to increase the attractiveness of the video particuarly towards males and in humorous videos, intertextuality is often used.

I have applied these key features to mine and Sadie's music video:

- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics. We will show a text with part of the lyrics of the song as Joel is singing them to amplify them.

- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music. The music is a mixture of piano and guitar. It will be of a fairly slow pace to amplify the visual mood of Joel.

- Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography. We are using a similar style of spilt screen to that used in The Plain White Tee's video of Hey There Delilah which shows to different pieces of action happening at the same time.

- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist. We are having a lot of close-ups on Joel's face to show his emotions clearly. We will focus the majority of the shots on him alone.

- Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc. We are using split screens with one focussing on Joel and another of his girlfriend. We may also include a shot of Joel singing into the mirror/looking at his reflection.

- There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans. We have chosen music that is very similar to the acoustic, indie style music used by James Blunt and The Plain White Tees which will appeal to fans of this genre. We are also using similar shooting styles such as simple locations and shots.

hope you enjoyed this as much as i did dais :) ha just thought i'd fill you in in an interesting way haa.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form:

- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography
- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals, song/lyrics and the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require.
Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
Many of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the aim of the record company/artist.

Key:
Black writing his key theories.
Pink writing is how these theories will relate to our music video.

- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
Key scene when Joel sings, please come back tomorrow, we are going to show a text saying this sentence, there for amplifying the lyrics.

- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
The tempo of our video is quite slow and will go along steadily with the tempo of the music.

- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
We will have close ups of when Joel is miming also when he is in his bedroom, we had a birds eye view close up on his face to really show how he is feeling.

- Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc.
This could relate to our split screen effect and we may use Joel looking at himself in a mirror.

- There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.
We have similarities to Plain White T's so viewers will recognise something they like, also the genre of music is very similar so it should be successful.

x

Study of 3 music video's.

To understand how to make a really good music video we need to look at successful former videos so we can see what works and what elements look good and how to appeal to our target audience and by using successful techniques of videos of the same genre.
It is ideal to look at low budget films to see what they are capable of as obviously ours is a low budget film. An ideal band who's videos look good but easy to make are the Maccabee's, I am looking at the video for - . The other two video's i will do a close study of are,

Planning.

In this lesson we are finishing drawing our story board so then we can take individual pictures and then make them into a slide show on the computer.

We also have had a change of location. Thinking more about the style of our video and how we want Joel to be shown, we cant use one of our houses. Our houses look too like 'family homes' and i think this would make the video look too homemade and like we havent thought about the mise en scene enough. We wanted a really plain mise en scene, student looking housing and just simple like th video. So as my brother goes to uni in london, he lives in a student house so we will go to london to do our filming. The inside will then look way better and we can use the scenery around london which will be so much more effective and proffessional. Also the students he lives with can be the background people and will fit in better.
We are sorting out dates and planning to go down for two days in half term :)

Theory

Steve Neale said, "Genres are instances of repitition and difference" By this he means, genres show the repitition in the same genres throughout, like the recogniseable features, for example horror you will always see murder, or an innocent attractive girl. However the genre has developed over the years so every new horror you see you see something different aswell as the similarities. This is partly to do with the newer technology but these new ideas are needed to attract audiences to see more of the same genre films.

This can also be applied to music videos, narrative acoustic videos always have similarites but they need to have their own take on the concept and be individual. Our video will have elements that are similar to other videos, like James Blunt and Plain White T's but we also have are own original ideas and have made the similar things look like our own way.

Key Concepts:
1) Representation
2)Language and forms
3) Audience
4) Narrative
5) Genre
6) Institutions
7) Values and Ideologies

The most important key concepts are the first 4

Representation- how the characters are presented to the audience/settigns ect presented
What are they represented as?

Language and forms- how they are represented the way they are.
evidence from text
e.g mise en scene - lighting, props, costume
camera angles/positions
sound/music
editing
digetic/non-diagetic - sound/ lighting

Audience- Affected? Feelings?
Where are the audience positioned? Against them or on their side.
Stereotypes to be recognised.

Genre- is the representation a generic convention?
recogniseable/stereotype?
challenge established conventions?

x

Theorists

In our lessons we have been learning and going over the theories of media.
The main theorists we have been looking at are:
-Propp
-Todorov
-Levi Strauss
-Barthes

Vladimir Propp analysed fairytales, and proposed it was possible to classify the characters and their actions/roles. This theory works for a lot of films but it is starting to fade out more recently with all the different genres, so this highlights similarities between different films.

Character roles.
The Hero
The Villain
The donor
The dispatcher
The faulse hero
The helper
The princess
Her father

We cannot apply all these to our practical, but some do work. Like Joel will be seen as the hero, he is the main character and people will like him, and empathise with his lyrics. His audience will be on his side. We don't get to know or see many other characters in the video, they are just background except for his girlfriend in the video who could be seen as the donor as she seems to try and help him, or she could be the princess.

Tzvetan Todorov is the theorist we can apply most easily to our idea for our video. Todorov says there are 3 stages in a narrative:

EQUILIBRIUM --> DISEQUILIBRIUM --> NEW EQUILIBRIUM
(State of -------> (disruption) -------> (new state of normality)
normaility)

START- Joel singing alone

MIDDLE - being disturbed

END - singing alone again but with people swarming around him

Roland Barthes suggested that narrative works with (five different codes*) which activate the reader to make sense of it. He also used the terms denotation and connotation to analyse images.

* 1) enigma code - puzzle
2) action code - signifies somethings going to happen
3) symobolic - connotation
4) semic - denotation
5) cultural - a narrative devise that audience can recognise as being part of a culture

Claude Levi-Strauss studied myths of tribal cultures. He examined how stories unconsciously reflect the values, beliefs and myths of a culture.
He also applied Binary oppositions to texts;
A conflict between two qualities or terms (pairs), for examplr western films:

Homesteaders --------------------Native Americans
Christian------------------------- Pagan
Domestic --------------------------Savage
Weak ------------------------------Strong
Garden ----------------------------Wilderness
Inside society--------------------- Outside society

28/09/09 & 1/10/09 - Theory Lessons

For these lessons we went through theory work from last year to make sure that we knew all the key concepts and could apply them to our own projects.
The theorists we looked at are:
-Vladimir Propp.
-Tzvetan Todorov.
-Barthes.
-Levi Strauss.
-Young and Rubicam.

Vladimir Propp based his theory on fairy tales. He classifies characters and actions and defines them into roles/functions. He created the roles; The Hero who seeks something, The Villain who oppses the hero, The Donor who helps the hero by providing a magic object, The Dispatcher who sends the hero on his way, The False Hero who falsely, The Helper who gives support to the hero, The Princess who is the reward for the hero and needs protection and finally, Her Father (Usually a King or someone powerful)

From looking at these roles, I applied them to a modern, popular film: SHREK.

Hero --> Shrek
Villain --> Lord Farquad
Donor --> Donkey (And Puss in boots in the 2nd and 3rd movies) However, you could class the Dragon as the Donor also. Although The Donor usually provides a magic object, The Dragon is the magic object in Shrek.
Dispatcher --> Lord Farquad
False Hero --> Lord Farquad/Prince Charming
Helper --> Donkey/Puss in the boots
Princess --> Fiona
Her Father --> King of Far Far Away.

Tzvetan Todorov's theory was based on Eqilibrium, Disequilibrium and New Equilibrium.
Equlibrium is a state of normality, Disquilibrium is the disruption and the New Equlibrium is the new state of normality which is different to the original one.

We tried our best to apply this theory to our own work (the music video):
Equilibrium: Joel singing to the camera as the starting shot.
Disequlibrium: Busy scenes in the house, Girlfriend comes over.
New Equilibrium: Back to starting shot of Joel singing with some slight changes.

Barthes theory involves narrative with 5 different codes which activate the reader to make sense of it. The 5 types of narrative are:
ACTION --> a narrative device by which a resolution is produced through action, e.g a shoot out.
ENIGMA --> a narrative device that teases the audience by presenting a puzzle or riddle to be solved. Works to delay the story's ending pleasurably.
SYMBOLIC --> connotation.
SEMIC --> denotation. (Denotations of
CULTURAL --> a narrative device which the audience can recognise as being part of a culture e.g a "made man" in a gangster film is part of the mafia culture.

We have applied this theory to our music video: The symbolic narrative will affect the representation of Joel. We want him to come across as clean and well presented. We will do this by dressing him in smart casual wear, with neat hair etc. However to show the Cultural aspects we we will include typical male props in the scenes where Joel is in his room, for example, books, university work, his instruments etc.

Levi-Strauss's theory examines how stories unconsciously reflect the values, beliefs and myths of a culture - these are usually expressed in the form of binary oppositions. For example, Cowboys and Indians, Weak and Strong, Hero and Villain etc.
The only way we can apply this theory to our work is through the moods portrayed in the video such as Joel is feeling down and miserable and everyone around him seems happy and carefree.

Young and Rubicam's Theory is based on the different types of audience:. It involves four consumers:

The Mainstreamers: 40% of the population. They want security and to belong to a group.
The Aspirers: They want status and self-esteem. They follow status symbols and designer labels. Live off credit and cash.
The Succeeders: Already have status and control.
The Reformers: Defined by self-esteem/self-fulfillment.

The consumer we are aiming our video towards are The Aspirers because these type of audiences are similar to our artist Joel Owen as they are young, living off possible cash from work or student loans and they follow status symbols etc.

We also went over the Key Concepts to make sure we knew them well and could include them in our blogs and apply them to our practical.
The Key Concepts include:
Language and Forms (Mise-en-scene/Camera Angles/Sound/Editing)
Genre (Generic conventions)
Representation (How a character/class/location/race/age group is presented. Links to stereotypes)
Institutions (Film companies/Producers/Certain Institutions have particular styles of productions, for example Working Title focus mainly on British Rom Coms)
Audience (How the product will appeall to them/How it will make them feel/What reaction are you aiming for etc..)
Narrative (Storyline. Closed or Open storyline. Is there a defined beginning, middle and end?)
Values & Ideologies. (What attitudes or beliefs are raised in the text.)

Steve Neal says: "Genres are instances of repetition and difference". This means whatever features appear in a certain genre are expected to be found in all films of this genre and to follow the styles used, but as new films are made, new aspects are introduced and become modern features of this genre. For example in a horror film you expect there to always be a murderer or some type of "monster/zombie" that kills or tries to kill the main character.

I applied this theory to our work and a generic convention of music videos is to have close ups of the main artist and for the style of music to suit the lyrics of the song.

On the 1st of October we looked at a clip from The Godfather. We took detailed notes on aspects such as; Camera Angles, Camera Shots, Mise-en-scene, Music, Lighting, Characters/Costume as well as representation. Although we are not making a film like this, I tried my best to link parts of this to our music video.

From looking at the video I know that we need to be aware of camera and angles, lighting and mise-en-scene in particular scenes when trying to present Joel in the way we want to. For camera angles we are going to include close-ups when showing Joel's emotions, Mid shots for any casual angles of Joel moving around the house and High/Low angled shots for the split screen scene of Joel in his room and his girlfriend outside.

For the shots of Joel in his room we will use fairly dark lighting to try and represent the mood of Joel being depressed. However to show the contrast between Joel's mood to everyone elses we will use bright lighting when shooting Joels girlfriend in the street outside.

For the mise-en-scene we need to include shots of the clock ticking round as the time moves on and a shot of the drink gradullay going down in the glass. We also need to include typical objects that represent what sort of person Joel is in his bedroom such as instruments, clothes, books etc to portray his life.

For the audience impact we want them to be able to relate with the issues Joel is faced with and to be empathetic towards him. We want them to like Joel as the character and the singer.

Planning.

Today's lesson is our last practical lesson untill we are ready to start editing ect. So we used the time to sort out all our blogs, moving them from the VLE to blogspot and finishing all our planning and research so we are completely ready to start filming.
Daisy and I have spoken about when we can film and when i get home i will speak to Joel and arrange a practical time table that he can fit with as he will be going back to uni, so we shall have a schedual of when we are doing everything and when it will be completed by.

Pitch.

Last lesson we presented our pitches to the class with all our idea's and then had feed back from the class. People mostly liked our idea's and then just said we needed to get our pictures up of our story board and sketches of poster and CD cover and people were agreeing with our decision to do practise shots and see if our editing suite has the technology to make our idea's look good. We have some fairly aspirational idea's like the split screen and fast forwarding so we will be making drafts as tests. We will upload our drafts later onto our blog.
This is our power point and our pitch has been filmed with feed back and we will upload the video.

Daisy's original blogs (15 blogs)

23/09/09 - Blog work
This lesson I have been adding more detail onto my original blogs and inserting the images that we took of our hand drawn designs. I have also spent alot of time making sure each blog is the right size and coloured font with the correct images. We also inserted our video of the music pitch from slideshare.
Also this lesson we drew up our storyboards again as we lost our original ones. We aim to take pictures of them as soon as possible to put onto our blogs.

21/09/09 - Planning
This lesson we are making sure all our planning work is organised and sorted properly before we take time out to work on theory in lessons. Sadie and I spoke about a schedule for when we can start on our filiming and Sadie is going to speak to Joel and arrange the best times for him and us. We need to make sure we work our schedule around when we are both free and when Joel is at home, as he goes back to Uni soon.

17/09/09 - Viewing pitches
This lesson we viewed everyone's pitches. By looking at other people's pitches, it gives us a good insight into other people's ideas and how they are progressing with their work. This was useful because it helped us to know whether we were on the right track to finishing our work in time and if we needed to do anymore work and make any adjustments.

16/09/09 - Pitch
This lesson we are showing our pitch to the rest of the class for feedback. This is our pitch:

Our Music Video Pitch

The feedback we gained from our class members and teachers were overall really positive. Everybody seemed to like our idea and enjoyed the clip we showed them of Joel singing to give them a rough idea of his style of music. The only things we were told to improve on were including images of our story boards and drawn work into our pitch to show our developements with them and to include some information on the kind of technology work we will be using such as how to slow the music down for our video in certain parts etc.

14/09/09 - Last Lesson
This lesson we foccused on our poster and story board. We completed the drafts and were meant to take pictures of them for our pitch but didn't have enough time in the end.
We also started on our new blogs on blogspot. After some difficulties with moving our original blogs over, we managed to work it all out and have started to put our blogs together on here.

10/09/09 - Pitch & Research
This lesson we are focussing on finishing our pitch to show the rest of the class in a few lessons time.
This pitch will help us with getting feedback from the same age group as our target audience on our ideas for our product.

By gaining feedback we will find out what works well from our class members who are of the same age as our target audience. We will also find out any improvements that we may need to make and can work on them before starting the practical work such as filming and music etc.

Also this lesson I am going to study a scene from Hey There Delilah that I think is effective and is also a feature we would like to include in our music video.

Here are a few examples of the types of things we would like to include:

Split screen of two different pieces of action happening at the same time -

This is one of the opening scenes from the video. I think this scene is effective because it shows two different things happening at the same time in the same shot. It has an extreme close up of the mouth of the singer from The Plain White Tees aswell as some establishing shots of the New York roads leading to a shot of Delilah walking.

Split screen/same shot -

This is a shot of the singer playing the guitar. Although it is still in the split screen layout, both sections are focussed on the singer, showing one complete image. I think this shot is clever and quirky and would look good if we used it for our video to show Joel playing his guitar.

09/09/09 - Extra Research
This lesson we are focussing on more detailed research for our planning such as the genre moodboard and reading around the cd covers that we have used for inspiration etc.
By doing this we are adding detail to our planning and we are ensuring that we have every aspect of our product covered and planned thoroughly which will be a great help when it comes to filiming the final product.

For our moodboard we will include details such as mise en scene, types of characters, the style of clothing, the style of music and instruments and possible camera angles.

Here is our genre moodboard:

Through our research we are gaining a wide knowledge of the generic conventions and features that fall under our genre and style of work, helping to create an effective final product.

For the research into our similar songs, we looked at a video of the making of 'You're Beautiful' by James Blunt.

http://www.t5m.com/james-blunt/making-of-james-blunts-youre-beautiful-music-video.html

By researching into how music videos are made it gives us a better insight into how we may want to film or set our own. Useful tips such as where to put the camera for certain angles and what effect we are trying to achieve will help us during the making of our video.

1/07/09 - Pitching
This lesson we are focussing on the powerpoint for our pitch. We are including all of our ideas so far and reasons why we have chosen them.

By doing this we are showing possible members of our target audience our ideas, and by using their feedback we can make any amendments to our work if needed. This will help us alot as it will give us some insight into the type of product our target teenage audience are interested in.

We are including an Introduction on our portfolio, with ideas, research and planing etc. Aswell as this, we have wrote about the generic conventions of Indie music, inspirations for our video and cd cover, mise en scene, details on each planned shot for the sections of the song, ideas for the poster and cd cover, ideas for the logo to go on the cover and possible institutions we may use for our production.

29/06/09 - Planning
This lesson we will focus on finalising our initial ideas for the front cover. We are taking our ideas from the last lesson before this one and building on our traced sketches of Joel, as well as chosing fonts and colours. We need to be looking towards bright and bold colours to follow with our pop-art theme.

We looked at a few logos to give us ideas for our own one. Here are some examples:

We decided to go against a generic logo and create our own one because we thought this added a more personal touch to our ancillary tasks. We already have an idea of the type of logo we want, so we have drawn this out onto our neater sketches of the front cover so know where abouts we want to place it, this will help when we come to actually making our front covers because we will know the space and sizes needed for each section of the cover.

Upon looking through hand drawn designs of cd covers, I liked these images the most and if we can, we will try to feature some of these ideas into part of our design.

I like these designs because they are simple colours but detailed drawings and I like the style in which they have been drawn. Although I have looked at these images for inspiration, for our cd cover we will be using colour as we prefer a coloured design and it will stand out more than a black and white design.

24/06/09 - Planning
This lesson we are also focussing on our sketches for the cd covers and the poster. Our aim is to have a finalised idea for the poster with the fonts and colours all sorted, as well as our desings sorted out for the cd covers and the right logo.

We have changed our initial idea for the front cover which was to draw a clock in the center and have a hand drawn picture of Joel as the hands on the clock. Instead of this idea, we went to the library and used the internet to search for images of Joel that we could use for our front cover. We chose 2 of our favourite images and used the printed images for our sketches. We have chosen centered images of Joel, and traced around them, we will then use 3 of the same image and have them each in different colours on the front.

These are the three of the possible images we may use:

We liked these images as they are simple and show a clear shot of Joel if we wanted to use one for the front cover. Our favourites were the two similar ones on the left and right with a vintage looking background and two different shots of Joel in the center. We are aiming to trace around these images and change them slightly, before finding a suitable way to include them onto the front cover.

For the back cover we are aiming for a simple design with just the song names written down the center in a list.

The influence for our front cover design is Andy Warhol as we think this style of image, known as pop-art, is bright and modern and will appeal to our teenage target audience because nowadays teenagers are into quirky, different styles that take over from the generic versions. As well, if our cd was on the shelf in a shop, a bright image will help to get our cd noticed amongst others.

Here are some examples of Andy Warhol's designs:

17/06/09 - Planning
This lesson we are focussing on listening to the song in detail to work out the time slots for each verse, and are starting on drawing up our story boards.

We discussed each verse thoroughly before finalising our ideas for each one. By doing this, we are hoping to have each scene perfected when it comes to filming and are aiming to ensure that the narrative fits with the song. The mise-en-scene we want to use is a typical, normal household, with all the daily things happening around Joel. This idea fits in with the title of the song 'One of those days'.

16/06/09 - Ancilliary Tasks And Research
For our ancilliary tasks we have decided to do the poster and the cd cover because we think we could produce good designs for them and we think these pieces fit together well for the promotional package.

We want to feature two similar pictures of Joel for the main cover and the poster so they link together to form the final product with the music video itself. We had the idea to take a still image from one of the shots in the video itself such as the first shot, which is a frozen shot of Joel and a fast forwarded background.
Here is an idea of the type of poster we want:

We looked at film posters such as The Terminal for inspiration because it is a smilar style to the idea we would like to use.
We also looked at Jason Mraz's cd cover, which is a drawn picture of his face, we liked the idea because we like the simple design to it and we think it is quirky and appealing to fit in with the simple, acoustic stlye music.

I prefer the drawn illustration for the front cover because it is unlike the generic cd covers which would usually feature a photo or image, directly linked to the artist or music.

16/06/09 - Research and Planning
At the start of the lesson, I looked at a video of the acoustic singer Boyce Avenue to give us ideas, incase we change our plan to a more simple acoustic idea. Boyce Avenue is a fairly well known, very talented acoustic artist, he is alot like Joel in the fact that he has a very good voice for singing acousticly and can play many instruments.

Here is the link to the main page for Boyce Avenue on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/user/boyceavenue?blend=1&ob=4

Mainly, this lesson, we have focussed on finalising the shots for each section of the song.

The song we have chosen is called 'One Of Those Days'.
Here are the lyrics to the song we have chosen to use, with our ideas next to each verse:
media lyrics.pub

The shots we have chosen to use are:
1ST VERSE: Joel stood in a frozen shot in the kitchen/lounge, people fast forwarded around him doing their usual daily things.
2ND VERSE: Joel in bed, cant sleep or concentrate.
3RD/4TH/5TH VERSE: Joel sees girlfriend through the window, texts are sent, smiles at girlfriend, back to bed.
6TH VERSE: Goes back to frozen shot of Joel leaving the house. Split screens to shots of family going off to do things. Fades out.

Originally, we had the idea to have the busy streets in Leicester as our location and for the mise en scene we were going to shoot crowds of people bustling past Joel in fast forward motion so that Joel was frozen in one spot. We thought this would be a good idea because it shows he is going nowhere which is some of the lyrics in the first verse. Instead, we decided to make it more personal, by setting the location in his house to link with the fact that he is talking about his own life. We are still going to use the fast forward tool to give a more professional effect, to do this we will have to slow the song down by 4 times and get Joel to mime at this speed for the filming. Then, during the editing we will speed the song and the people in the background up by 4 times so that the music and Joel miming are now at a normal speed, but the action around him is fast forwarded. Hopefully, Joel can get hold of the person he knows that sorts out all the technical side to his music so we can get some professional help on this.

By using the software on the new computers to do this, it should be up our skills on the different programs and should help to give us ideas on what kinds of editing we could use on further media products.

By typing our ideas with the song lyrics it gives us a more detailed idea of what shots we want to use for each verse and will help us later down the line when it comes to filming and drawing up our story board.
We are aiming to start out story boards in the upcoming lessons to ensure we give ourselves enough time to get each shot well planned before filming.

12/06/09 - First Ideas and Research

A2 PORTFOLIO.

From the 8 briefs for our media practical, we have chosen to do the promotional package for a music video and the two ancilliary tasks we are going to do are the poster and the cd cover.
We have chosen to do this because we think we can work well on this type of media and have lots of ideas to put into use. We are basing our music video on Joel Owen (Sadie's brother) as we enjoy his music and we think we can appeal to the teenage audience who are part of a generation where acoustic/indie music is becoming increasingly more popular, and as we are both interested in this genre of music, we can use our own interests and feelings towards this style to put into our work.

These are some hand drawn designs of our mind maps. These mind maps include ideas for what we could base our music video on, aswell as details such as locations, clothes, camera shots etc:

We are aiming to create a professional looking music video, the song is around 4 minutes 30 seconds and we hope to do enough filiming to feature the whole song in our final product but if the length of the song is a problem, we will cut the song down to make sure there are no problems for the final film.

We have got ideas from music videos such as 'Hey There Delilah' By The Plain White Tees and 'You're Beautiful' By James Blunt because these are similar types of genre to the music we have chosen and we particularly remembered the video for 'Hey There Delilah' because it features some conventions such as split screen as this is something we would like to include in our video.

James Blunt - You're Beautiful

its just me,paul MySpace Videos

By looking at these videos, it has given us ideas on what sort of shots we could use such as close ups on Joels face to show his emotions and low and high angled shots when showing the split screen of Joel and his girlfriend. It also gaves us ideas of what camera angles work well and how we could link the shots to the music effectively.

Our initial idea is to use a still image of Joel in the center of the shot for the first verse and to speed up the people and action in the background. By doing this we are drawing attention to Joel straight away, and the shot will soley focus on Joel and his singing. As there will be no particular action going on other than Joel singing, this introduces Joel well as an acoustic artist. For the remainder of the song we aim to include shots and split screens to show different scenarios taking place that link to the verses.
