PLANNING & RESEARCH - 10/09/09

Our pitch is finished and we are presenting it to the class by next week so will be able to have feed back.

Now our storyboard is finished and we are sure about our setting, locations, costume etc we are planning our shots and scenes in more detail. Camera angles and the way we want our scene to look.

For one section we are aiming for something like this, this is a still image from the video Hey there Delilah which we have used as inspiration from the start. This opening scene has the boy on his guitar and shows the girl in a different location we would like to use this effect to show two characters in our video. It would be very similar to this with Joel alone probably singing, possiblty with his guitar and a girl walking away from his house.

Later in this Plain White T's video it uses this split screen effect but, it is still in the same room, for particular parts of the song we may use this, as it would then look like it was separating Joel from everything and making him appear more alone.

RESEARCH - 09/09/09

We have produced a genre moodboard on the type of video we are producing. It shows mise en scene, style and clothing, style of music, types of audience.

MUSIC VIDEO - Summer holidays
Over the summer Daisy has been coming over to mine and we have been going around with Joel looking for locations for our video, we are using our house for parts but then are using town like a busy high street and the streets around my area.

We have also taken our photo's for our CD cover and Poster, with this done it will give us more time to work on our main task when we are back and we can just focus on the editing and putting together of our ancillary tasks when we are ready.

As we had some complecated effects we wanted to use for our video we have tried practising them with our camera just as rough idea's to see what they will look like. Joel's friend has a studio and is working on slowing the track down by 4 times for Joel to practising miming along with but we don't have the equipment to fast forward at home but once we have filmed it we can as soon as we are back to school test it to see if it will look good rather than filming it all properly and then trying it incase it doesnt look as good as we hope. We also have filmed tester clips to try and work out how to get them playing along side each other as a split screen.

Research.

Having watched afew music video's that have given us inspiration and are similar to how we are aiming ours to be we need to research into the production of the video's. We looked at the video for James Blunts "You're beautiful." We were able to find a short video which showed part of making the video, http://www.t5m.com/james-blunt/making-of-james-blunts-youre-beautiful-music-video.html

Music video's will always have a much larger budget than we do, looking at research most successful video's have a very large budget : "A low budget music video costs $100,000 at least," he said. Judge Mathis clearly operates under major label principles. OK, sure, you can spend $100,000 on a video. You can spend ten times that much. But you don't have to. Here, video director A. Flegenheimer walks you through making a music video on a budget that might be slightly less than the good judge has at his disposal.

However like this, other websites say you can make low budget video's with the quality of the £100,000 ones. Looking through the internet i cant find any information on the making of the video's for the artists that are similar to Joel and have inspired us apart from that first video on James Blunt's video. I'm trying to find the budget for Hey there Delilah but it doesn't seem to be on google or wikipedia.

ANCILLARY TASKS - 29/06/09
Today we are continuing with sketing our CD cover and posters. We are aiming to have the set out drawn and all the fonts, sizes , colours and positions decided.

Instead of drawing the images of Joel on the front cover we decided to use photo's as when we practising tracing photo's of him or just drawing him it didn't look good or really show it was him! So we are using the same lay out, we will have 3 similar photo's of joel on a white background. The photo's will be slightly different either with them being in different colours or Joel doing a slightly different pose each time

These are the photo's we have taken and we will probably use three of these. We chose to use my sisters wallpaper as the background as it looks really effective and i thought if we decided not to crop Joel out it would look good and fits in with his retro style. I chose to put him in these clothes because they are simple but look fashionable and a bit different, with the necklaces to show his personality and add some style.

In this picture I asked him to look right at the camera and look thoughtful, I wanted him to look a bit lost. Like he was having 'one of those days'! We had his hair over his eye to look more closed and distant.

In this photo I wanted him to be looking elsewhere, as if thinking again and wanting something, this shot really shows his face so would make him more accessable to the audience.

This time I wanted Joel to be looking up and looking sort of hopeful, the lighting in this picture is really good and he is looking towards the brightness, as if that is where the hope is.

In this shot Joel is looking more 'attractive' and appealing to the audience, HIs eyes looking to the camera and in an individual pose.

For our poster we are using the idea like the teminal with the blured background and then Joel in the center stood still, this again is relating to the video. To make this look very obvious and effective we will probably take to photo's one of a moving crowd and another of Joel then cut round it and put it on top. We may make Joel black and white and keep the colour for the backgroud.

We will keep the writing minimal and simple again, with just his name, the song name, dates of release and our company logo.

We haven't taken thes photo's yet.

This lesson we have also looked at creating our company logo, keeping it simple and like other music producer's company logo's.

These are some examples of music logo's that inspired us:

We have made a few hand drawn designs and will create our favourite on Adobe.

CD COVER - 24/06/09

Today we are drawing sketches of what our cd cover will look like. After researching other covers we have stuck to the generic conventions of simple, with just joel and the necessary writing. We attempted our tracing idea, however it did not come out how we would hope and the image was not clear that it was Joel. So, we are going for the hand drawn effect on the back cover with the big clock and maybe our logo of Joels name but we will be using photo's we have taken of him. We think we will have on the front three photo's of him but slightly different maybe in different colours, with a Andy Warhole look, known as pop-art. It's bright and modern and will appeal to our teenage target audience because nowadays teenagers are into quirky, different styles that take over from the generic versions. As well, if our cd was on the shelf in a shop, a bright image will help to get our cd noticed amongst others.

This is an example of Andy Warlhole's design.

It is the same picture but just with different effects on, which is what we will be doing just three times on the front. However i don't think we will change the colours quite as harshly as this.

We will design a logo for our company to have on the back.

x

We had decided that originally we wanted one of our ancillary tasks to have the hand drawn effect and we have chosen that will be the CD cover, but we still want it to have elements that link it to the poster and video.

Researching covers of similar genres it is evident that there is always minimal writing and generally a picture of the artist.

For the backcover we are having a hand drawn big clock, that links to the one in the video. It will be on a white background with just a simple black outline of it (not filled in) and then instead of hands photo's of Joel tesselated round as if he is going round, possibly bluring into each other. Then we will use simple black font to have the track and song title and then our producer logo in the corner.

For the front cover we are going to trace round a photo of joel and have this outline 3times in different colours on a white back ground, with his name writtten like a sort of logo and the name of the song written on it. These are three pictures we are going to test drawing around.

MUSIC VIDEO & CD COVER - 23/06/09

This lesson we are going to continue with our story board, finalising each section of the song and the shots we are going to be doing.

We are also going to research CD covers and posters and draw up mock ups of what we would imagine them to look at. Joel has made a CD himself with a proffessional CD cover taken by a photographer he knew, so we have brought this in with us to have a look at as well as other CD covers on the internet that we can look at. From these we will get idea's and see the generic conventions of a typical accoustic CD cover. We will need to look at how much writing generally is on covers and the fonts and postion.

This is the picture that featured on his album cover. And it had simple white font, with minimal writing.

MUSIC VIDEO - 17/06/09

Today we have gone through more thoroughly what we are doing for each section, how long particular scenes will last and began to create our story board.

Having researched video's of Joel's style and genre of music such as James Blunt and James Morrison we see that some video's tell the story of the song i.e James Blunts Goodbye my lover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcblUah5XcI (for some reason i could only find the video with spanish translation on!), where as others may just look like a performance of the song. We have used elements of both but it mostly like the narrative video, as he isn't performing it as such however at points he will be miming along with it. This is similar to James Blunt's video for You're Beautiful, he is singing in the video but not performing his song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztc4V3ttlso (for some reason i could only find the video with spanish translation on again!)

ANCILLARY TASKS - 16/06/09

For our ancillary tasks, we are going to make a CD cover for the single and a poster advertising it and Joel as an artist. These were the most obvious choices to do with our video as we can clearly link all the products together and they would both contibute to the single and music video reaching a wider audience. We would like them to relate to what we see in video, so I have an idea that it would be Joel stood looking at the camera and blur's of people passing. Possibly with Joel in black and white and the surrounding setting and people in colour. This links to our idea's for the opening of our video, so it would look almost like a still shot from it. However it wouldn't be as i think we would use a different location for example outside somewhere really busy, and Joel would be in a separate picture so we could make him black and white and layer it on top.

We saw a poster that has a very similar theme and effect to what we'd like, which is the poster for The Terminal, although a film it's poster has the same purpose as ours would.
This would be the kind of effect we are hoping for.

We have thought about for one of the poster or cd cover, the picture to be the same or similar but drawn. This is because we want to keep it looking very similar so it is obvious that they are both promoting and for the same single. An example of a simple drawn cover could be Jason Mraz's album cover

We would like simple drawings like this probably in just black and white and not filled in. The drawing would be similar to the photo we use of Joel and the crowd so that we keep all our tasks linked clearly and related to the video that the poster would be promoting

MUSIC VIDEO- 16/06/09

This lesson we have discussed the idea's together for each section and finalised what we will do for all the parts and so now can imagine the whole video together. It will also help us to create our story board and put it all together when filming. These are our final idea's - media lyrics.pub

Originally for our mise en scene and location we planned to use, a busy high street most likely in town, however we have now decided to have the same effect with people passing him by but just at home, this would show a more personal approach to him feeling alone. We will use a kitchen area and probably a living room, we also will have him in his bedroom at one point, i want the bedroom to be really plain and quite empty, just very minimal mise en scene. We will also be using the outside of the house, we're not sure who's house we will be using yet but it just needs to be an ordinary family home.

The video won't have many characters in our video, it will have Joel obviously, then a girl similar age to him playing his girlfriend, possible his real girlfriend or maybe just one of our friends as afew do drama. I will also use my family in the background in the home scenes when they are walking around him.

We talked about Joel's style he will be dressed sort of indie like, this is his normal style and we want him to come through as he normally does. This style will link with his accoustic music and also be appealing to our target audience, without being directly too associated with a niche group and deterring other people of different styles.

We are going to start producing our story board now of the video so we have the structure in more specific form. The song is four and a half minutes long so we may decide to cut it if necessary, but we are going to start planning it all now so we should have time.

MUSIC VIDEO- 14/06/09

Having chosen our song, we have been listening to it to try and get idea's and a picture of what we could imagine in a real music video for a song like this.

We had had the idea of Joel being stood still somewhere busy and people swarming around him as if he wasn't there. This would be similar to Will Young's Leave Right Now video. This would be at the start of the song as he says lines like, "where I feel I'm going no where.." We'd really like him to be singing at normal pace but for it too look like the crowd it is fast forwarded, I know how we would create this effect. Having watched a programme about making music video's I worked it out as they talked about Leona Lewis's video for A moment like this, however they were doing it in the opposite way to us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR6qSfBqJVg This video looks like it is filmed in slow motion, they created this effect by speeding up the song by 4times and she mimed at that pace when they filmed it they then slowed it down by 4 times in the actuall video so it fit with the orignal song but looked slow. So, I would like to be able to slow Joel's song down by four times or so and he can mime to that and the people around him would be walking at normal pace, so when we sped that up by four times so it was the same pace as the song originally, Joel would look to be at normal time (as he would be stood still) and the people who were walking would be going very fast. However we don't know whether with the technology we have that we'll be able to do that effectively.

Before we had decided on the song, we had thought of having a split screen with Joel one side and a girl who he was singing about on the other. So if we could get that element into this video and be able to do it at school we would like to be able to do that because it would look different and more proffessional we haven't thought of a good way to include it yet though. Inspiration for this part was from The Plain White T's video, "Delilah" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbJtYqBYCV8

A2 PORTFOLIO - Start 12/06/09

Out of the 8 main coursework tasks, we (Daisy and me) have chosen to do the music video. This is because it instantly appealed to us as my brother sings and plays instuments so we knew some of his songs and could think of idea's for video's for him. We did consider some of the other options aswell, like the advert or film trailer just to see what idea's we came up with but decided we could produce the best and most original product if we made the music video.

The singer we are using in our video is Joel Owen, we have listened to various songs and come up with idea's for afew but have settled on his song 'One of those days' as we had the best idea for an opening to it. Our video needs to appeal to target audiences of mostly teenagers, particularly interested in the indie/acoustic scene. As a young male artist he appeal more to females. However, although the main target would be a younger generation his music would be enjoyed by adults too as it is quite relaxing and in no way offensive. Researching similar artists such as James Morrison and James Blunt we know that many adults would buy there album or listen to there music. Knowing this we must not make our product directly for a niche younger audience.

The video's we intend to inspire us particullarly are, Plain White T's 'Delilah' and Will Young's 'Leave right now'. We will also watch some acoustic artists video's aswell for more inspiration such as James Morrison, Jason Mraz and James Blunt.

For our ancillary tasks, we will be making a CD cover for the single 'One of those days' and a poster advertising the single. This will have Joel on it but we haven't decided on what will be in the background or anything. It may be what looks like a still image of the video. We will need to research other covers and artists posters much more to see what type of thing works.
